General Info

Description

Acnedap® Gel is manufactured by Cipla. Acnedap® Gel comprises Dapsone as an active ingredient. Dapsone (also known as diaminodiphenyl sulfone or DDS) is a sulfone that possesses both antimicrobial/antiprotozoal and anti-inflammatory features. It is indicated for long- and short-term treatment of acne vulgaris.

Acne vulgaris is a common long-term skin disease characterized by clogged pores, various inflamed pimples, whiteheads, cysts, non-inflamed comedones, and possible scarring on the face, neck, chest, and back.

Acne is associated with abnormal growth of P. acnes bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) due to genetics and increase in androgen hormones, although normally these bacteria exist on the skin of every person. The immune response to P. acnes bacteria growth causes inflammation and acne progression.

MOA (mechanism of action)

As an antimicrobial agent, Dapsone is bacteriostatic in action and inhibits the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid in acne-causing Propionibacterium acnes leading to its death. As an anti-inflammatory, Dapsone inhibits lysosomal enzymes as well as multiple prostaglandins and leukotrienes thereby blocking their inflammatory effects.
